When customers install macOS Recovery, they receive the latest version of the recently installed macOS, with a few exceptions:

  • If your company uses Shift-Option-Command-R when running on an Intel-based Mac, you will be presented with the macOS that came with your Mac, or I would say the closest version available. If you’ve used Option-Command-R throughout the boot process, in most cases you’ll be presented with the latest version of macOS deemed compatible with your Mac. Otherwise, you will always be presented with macOS for your Mac, or a version that is still available.
  • If the Mac.logic snowboard has just been replaced, you might only get the latest macOS that works best with your Mac. If someone just erased your entire bootable CD, you might only be offered our own macOS that comes with your Mac, or the closest version might be available.

You can also use these methods to install macOS if you want macOS to be Mac compatible:

  • Use the App Store to download and install Get the latest version of macOS.
  • Use the App Store with a web browser to download and install an older version of macOS.
  • Use a different or second level USB drive to create a bootable installer.
